Pond Water Pumps

Pond water pumps function as the heart of the pond. It is responsible for pumping water into the pond, for maintaining the water aerated and for draining the pond of filthy water and other semi-solid sludge materials. It performs a vital function in keeping the ecosystem in the pond vibrant and healthy. It is for this reason that a compatible pump must be chosen to meet the needs of each and every pond.

Selecting The Type Of Pond Water Pumps To Use

If the pond is big it would need lots of power. External pond water pumps are better for purposes of drawing water into the pond or for draining the pond of liquids and sludge. This can also be used to aerate big ponds. Although difficult to install and is quite expensive, this heavy duty pump promises long-lasting performance and is easy to repair and maintain. There are two types of external pond water pumps: one that draws its own water or a self priming one and another that is not. A self-priming one is better for when the power source fails and returns, the pump will work well without threat of causing a burnout of the motor.

If the pond is small or medium sized, then submersible pond water pumps is sufficient. Although delivering not that great a power, it aptly meets the needs of smaller ponds. Being compatible to smaller ponds, it is more economical and energy efficient. It is easy to install. One just has to submerge it in the deepest portion of the pond, connect it to a power source and turn it on. It will operate continuously as long as the power source is turned on. Submersible pond water pumps are either direct driven or magnetic driven. If the purpose of the pump is to aerate the pond a magnetic driven one is better. It is completely sealed and there is no fear of any oil spill for it uses magnets to drive its motor. Oil spills from pumps are a danger to living things in the pond and so a good preventive measure is not to introduce a potential danger in the first place. If a fountain or a waterfall forms part of the pond, this magnetic driven pump cannot supply power for both the pond and the waterfall. A magnetic driven pump cannot lift water. In this case a separate direct driven pump for the waterfall or fountain must be put in place.

Finding Out The Required Size Of Pond Water Pumps

After determining which utility water pump or pond pump is best suited for the pond, the next step is to know the size of the pond water pumps needed. The rule is that the pump, at every hour, must be able to circulate half the pond waters volume. The best way to estimate this is to determine the volume of the pond water and to divide it by two. So if the volume is 1000 gallons, then after dividing by two, the suitable pond pump must be around 500-gph. Pump sizes are measured by gallons per hour (gph) or per minute (gpm).

To further maximize the potentials of the pond water pumps, the water that exits the motor must be made to flow freely. This means that the flow rate must not be restricted by small pipe fittings. Choose fittings that have a wide diameter, around twice the discharge point of the motor. Clean pipes regularly to ensure a good flow rate. Providing unimpeded flow rate and installing the most compatible pond water pumps assures you of a cost effective, high performing and low maintenance pond water system.
