Vickers Hydraulic Pumps

Vickers hydraulic pumps was invented by Harry Franklin Vickers (1898-1977), an American inventor. He has been given the recognition as being the “Father of Industrial Hydraulics.” Vickers is now part of Eaton and continues to be a market leader in piston pumps, vane pumps and its components (cylinders, valves and filtration products).

The Beginnings Of Vickers Hydraulic Pumps

The first Vickers hydraulic pumps was a very simple invention. The main purpose of the hydraulic pump is to obtain fluid energy power by the conversion of mechanical energy. This occurs when the hydraulic oil enters the pump. The weight pushes down the pistons. Consequently the entire piston assembly rotates. As the oil exits the entire process will begin again and the piston assembly will again rotate. This mechanical energy when used to move water is converted to fluid energy. From this simple invention of the Vickers hydraulic pump came the inspiration to add a shaft. If the assembly is connected to a shaft, as the assembly rotates it will also spin the shaft. But the spinning is faster and more powerful. To control the speed to a more functional range, the Vickers hydraulic motor was designed. The improved pump now had a gear reduction box that increases the torque generated as it decreases the rotational speed. Thus the pump has more power even if the speed of rotation is not as fast. Hence there is less pressure on the pump and at the same time this lengthens its operational life.

These Vickers hydraulic pumps became the force behind the hydraulic drive systems that steer powers cars, ships and aircrafts. To fully control the power that Vickers hydraulic pumps are able to generate so that it can be used for other things, improvements had to be added. Thus, the original design which had a fixed displacement meaning that the flow per rotation is not adjustable became known as the positive displacement pumps. Those that can be adjusted and were fitted with improvements causing more difficult construction became known as the variable displacement pumps.

Vickers Hydraulic Pumps New Models

The initial Vickers hydraulic pumps paved the way to the more precise and highly efficient pumps of today. The wave of inspirations since the invention of the first Vickers hydraulic pumps has continued till today.

In fact the recent models of the Vickers hydraulic pump VMQ boasts of being the leader in producing a line of pumps with the highest pressure capacity and the lowest noise levels. Vickers hydraulic pumps pride itself in being the first to develop a pump that can “weather the cold.” Its newest Vickers hydraulic pump model carries this innovation in its unique wafer plate design that makes the pressure rise even during a cold start-up.
